The purpose of this thesis was to study the ways patient’s loved ones took part in palliative care and also how to support them during this time. The goal was to find ways for nurses and other caregivers to support the role of those close to the patient in palliative care. The results of this thesis can be used in different units that do not yet have their own established instructions concerning palliative care.
The study was carried out as a qualitative study by interviewing a small focus group of nurses in a palliative care unit and by giving their patient’s loved ones a short questionnaire about the matter. Literature on palliative care was also used to support the theme of the thesis.
The results of the study show that it is essential for the nursing staff to have the right kind of skills, knowledge and experience to be able to provide quality palliative care for every patient and also support their loved ones in taking part in the process. It is important to have a palliative care plan that can act as a guide to the ones taking care of the patient, whether it is the nursing staff or the people closest to the patient. Nurses need to give time for the patients and for their loved ones. They also need to provide enough conversation and support with everyone involved in the process.
