Loppuosuudessa valmistustekniikoita vertailtiin keskenään niiden keskeisimpien ominaisuuksien perusteella. This thesis explored and compared the properties of 3D-printing to vacuum casting. The 3D-printing techniques were stereolithography, laser sintering, and metal laser sintering. The thesis was carried out for Ajatec Oy, which utilizes these technologies on its daily basis.
The theory section includes the basics of different technologies, how they work and what is their history. The section also illustrates the curing of liquid resin of stereolithography with an ultraviolet laser, the curing of powder for laser sintering with a carbon dioxide laser, and the vacuum casting process.
In the end, the manufacturing techniques were compared based on their key characteristics. In this thesis, the superiority of the technology was found to be largely depended on the desired material, its surface quality and production volumes. In 3D-printing the surface quality is clearly lower, while vacuum casting due to the mold, for example certain conical shapes cannot be made. When roughly sorted, metals are better suited for 3D printing, while plastics are more suitable for vacuum casting.
