This Bachelor’s thesis took a closer look at where Interactive Fiction games originate and what they actually are, aside from being simple text-based adventures. The original focus of this work was to make more people knowledgeable about Interactive Fiction, but it also provided more use. It showed how a typical game’s interactivity can be combined meaningfully with a narrative-focused story, and how important it is to have the correct project management tools.
Aside from telling about Interactive Fiction’s history, the theory part especially focused on the balance of interactivity versus narrative. It could roughly be separated into three different areas which were the player’s control over the narrative, the amount of branching paths, and how the game adapted to the player’s choices. Because of the practical research, this thesis also looked deeper into the making of Choice-based Interactive Fiction games, that specialize in branching narratives, and different ways of managing a project.
The practical research consisted of creating a Choice-based Interactive Fiction game. Its planning phase started from designing the setting and non-player characters, before ending with creating the statistics and different ending paths. The actual production phase was split into three different parts based on the project managements tools that had been used. It started with scrum that failed due to its too fast of a pace. Waterfall came midway but didn’t work either because it couldn’t properly be integrated with the project’s interactive parts. Kanban, that was used last, proved to be successful due to giving enough freedom and providing visual aid.
After evaluating the project management tools, Kanban was used to create a new management plan based on the original project. The plan also provided a solution for the imbalance of interactivity and narrative, focusing on designing them together instead of one at a time.
The final evaluation of the project showed how hard it is to combine interactivity and narrative in a balanced way. However, it can be done if they’re considered as one big entity instead of separate ones. Also, providing enough time for the planning and designing phases is the key to success, since Interactive Fiction games require considerable amount of pre-production. Lastly, finding the right project management tool is essential as a wrong approach can halt the project entirely.
