In recent years, there has been a recession in the travel and tourism industry. It is becoming more and more important for tourism operators to adapt their activities to a future intensification of competition. Today’s customers are changing. It is no longer the operators that control the customers but rather the customers that control the operators. Physical survival and material prosperity is a matter of course and we are now looking for experiences where you can test your boundaries, feel appreciation and a sense of belonging or just relax. Trying to create memorable experiences for customers has therefore become something that more and more tourism operators have started to focus on, and therefore today's society is often called an experience society.
Geocaching is a new activity where information technology is linked with outdoor life. The purpose of my thesis is to survey whether geocaching could be used as a new way to attract tourists to the Raseborg region. I am also trying to decide if geocaching excursions can be considered as a tourism experience.
Based on this research I believe that geocaching, in many aspects, can be considered as a tourism experience. I think there is potential for using the activity to attract tourists to Raasepori region provided that the people working in the project are genuinely interested in, and familiar with the phenomenon.
