The purpose of this thesis was to find out what culinary tourism is. Nowadays, the tourism business is divided into niches and hence culinary tourism is both a growing niche and a growing trend. With this in mind, the aim was to find out if it is possible for Finland to become a unique destination for culinary tourism.
The thesis consists of a theory part and a practical part, which is a series of articles. The theoretic part consists of five chapters which cover food tourism, niche tourism, culinary tourism, culinary tourism as a niche for Finland, development possibilities for culinary tourism in Finland and the future prospects for the culinary tourism industry. In order to find out the possibilities for culinary tourism in Finland, a SWOT-analysis was made with help from versatile literature and electronic sources together with own ideas. The series of articles is built on three qualitative interviews with two entrepreneurs within culinary tourism and one person who has taken part in Nordic food travel programmes on tv. The process is described and the result presented. The series of articles was made as a commission by Raili Häggblom who is a tourism teacher at Central Ostrobothnia University of Applied Sciences in the unit of Pietarsaari.
The aim with this thesis was to get a result as covering as possible about culinary tourism. The result became current and valuable knowledge about this tourism industry. In addition, this thesis gives a good understanding about culinary tourism and a good basis for further academic research. The series of articles point above all most to unused opportunities within the culinary tourism industry in Finland.
