As a developmental work was planned and carried out a psychoeducational group for adolescents with Asperger’s’ syndrome. The aim for the work was to respond to the need of information by the families and adolescents. The aim is to streamline the adolescent’s care pathway, to offer a bridge to the youths from getting the diagnosis to a better self-understanding and possible follow-up treatment.
This development project was ordered by the Adolescent Psychiatry Work Group of The Hospital District of Southwest Finland. The Work Group evaluates and sets diagnosis. Asperger syndrome causes variable limitations in functionality and it affects adolescent's ability to function and manage in everyday life. All persons with Asperger’s syndrome have difficulties in social communication, social interaction and social imagination. The sensory information and perception of a person with Asperger syndrome is individual and out of the ordinary. In addition, persons with Asperger’s syndrome might have special interests and repetitious behavior and pronounced routine engagement.
The goal for this work was to develop a psychoeducational group as useful as possible for adolescents with Asperger syndrome and to develop the group and its exercises to be functional, so that the group and its exercises would convey information about Asperger syndrome in an experiential way which would enable the increasing of the adolescent’s selfunderstanding. The constructivistic development model was used in the development project. As methods was used evidence-based information, informed inquiry and reflective journal.
As output of the developmental project was established a psychoeducational group for adolescents with the diagnosis of Asperger syndrome and three kinds of associated materials: Psychoeducational brochures for the adolescents, group instructor materials (PowerPoint slides and group instructor manual) and exercises for the group instructors. The results, in other words the brochures and group instructor materials can be taken advantage of by the Adolescent Psychiatry Work Group and the Outpatient Clinic in the future within psychoeducation. The goals were achieved, and the group came out to be a functioning whole.
