The aim of this thesis was to design and implement a sun protection solution that improves energy efficiency and comfort in a corridor of Wärtsilä campus of the Karelia University of Applied Sciences in co-operation with Artic-kaihdin Oy which is an expert in sun protection systems and also the client of the thesis. The thesis is also meant to be used for educational purpose.
In the design of the sun protection, the needs for cooling and heating, comfort conditions and the possibilities of automation in improving them were taken into account. The thesis looks through many different solutions of sun protection systems, their operational principles and properties and control possibilities, also takes a stand on their worthwhileness. An energy simulation program and the results from it were used in this thesis to find the benefits of the sun protection systems.
In conclusion, the changes of circumstances in the corridor and the automation program’s response to the changes were followed while the completed sun protection system was operating. The data from the changes of circumstances was logged for later analysis. As a result of the thesis the end user, Karelia University of Applied Sciences, received the intended sun protection solution that improves energy efficiency and comfort.
