This thesis investigated parents' experiences and thoughts about vaccination. Vaccination and the downrangening vaccine coverage was a current subject which needed to be investigated.
The purpose was to create an understanding and to survey the complex of problems when it comes to vaccine coverage in Ostrobothnia. The background to the parents' mistrust towards vaccines were investigated. The respondents wanted to hear every individuals’ thoughts to create an understanding among public health nurses towards those parents who choose not to vaccinate their children. There were questions the respondents used as a guideline to the interview; what has formed the mistrust towards vaccines? What kind of information would you as a parent like to get about vaccines? How do you want to be treated by healthcare professionals?
Nola J. Penders' Health promotion model was used as a theoretical framework for the study. The purpose of this model was to survey what stops people from participating in health promoting behaviors in order to solve these problems. In order to investigate this phenomenon in its depth a qualitative design was used. The respondents interviewed eight parents from Ostrobothnia. A large material was gathered and adapted through a qualitative content analysis with an inductive approach. The result of this was a large material which answered the studies purpose and its question formulation. The respondents hoped that this thesis would work as a support when health professionals encounter those who are sceptical towards vaccines.
The central themes in the result was awareness, information, personal treatment and other things that affected the informants' choice. The informants' told the respondents' in their own words how they had come to their decision and how health professionals and others had treated them with this decision.
