The purpose of our thesis was to find out, by means of qualitative research and method interviews, what kind of experiences working-age carers have of combining their paid work and family care. In addition to the care arrangements, we were interested in how the carers were coping at their work and their needs for support. The aim was for the sponsor to use the information obtained from the thesis to develop services aimed at working-age people. Six caregivers or close carers participated in the interviews. The interviews were conducted in December 2018 and in January 2019. The interviews were recorded and transcribed. The material from the interviews was analyzes by content analysis methods.
The results show that work is a resource for carers. However, they had to make changes on their work to reconcile it with their caring. Some have completely changed jobs, and some have a part-time job. Common for everyone is, that there are many requirements for gainful employment. Some of the working-age caregivers have left completely out of work because of the complexity of the care relationship. This affects both their earnings and their pensions to come. A larger problem from the working-age carers was the lack of a substitute care system. For the duration of their work, the caregivers have to arrange the care of their relative.
