In this thesis I investigate how seafarers think when they choose workplaces at sea. In the background I briefly describe how the work of seafarers have changed over time, and then a large part is devoted to today’s workplaces, that is, different types of ships. The background also includes the aspects salary, colleagues, comfort/availability and motivation.
The method I have used is a survey that has been answered by 21 active seafarers from Finland, Aland Islands and Sweden. The survey had three parts: The first part was questions about the respondent’s person, the second part was about the respondent’s education and current work, and the third part was to find out how the respondent was thinking when choosing workplace.
In the result part of the thesis, all the results from the survey are presented. The conclusion was, among other things, that the respondents prioritize a high salary and a suitable length of the shifts/vacation.
