kvinnor.
i manligt sällskap.
en så att säga ”If it makes you happy-Go for it-attityd”. Ämnets känslighet har beaktats. This study concentrates on aesthetic surgery and my aim is to explore what kind of
attitudes that exist toward cosmetic surgery among 20-25-year-old Finnish women.
Beauty ideals has long lived in our society - for example, in the West, beauty is associated with e.g. goodness. Nowadays we are constantly guarded by the media and especially the image flow is huge. The media throws more light than ever on e.g. celebrity
appearances, which in the moment of uncertainty can get especially many young
women to seek acceptance by trying to imitate them. Some are even thinking about
cosmetic surgery. Thousands of plastic surgeries are performed in Finland every year.
I have used a qualitative research method - a multi-case study with eight participators.
The information collection took form of semi-structured individual interviews. The interviews included questions about the participators beauty and media habits, different
demographic, psychographic and social factors with impact on their opinions, and how
they perceive plastic surgery from a needs perspective. The participators also got to
familiarize with two plastic surgery clinics' websites. Many thought that celebrities,
such as the plastic surgery reality TV star Kim Kardashian, affect today's ideal of
beauty. To express yourself visually, e.g., by posting selfies, have also become commonplace. All felt that an improved appearance to some extent probably give rise to
greater self-satisfaction. Some argued that a plastic surgery procedure could help to feel
more courage in male company. It is largely about acceptance and about a belief that
one's own body is a guide to happiness. According to these two companies this seems
to be a more common problem among women, as six of the participators said that they
are mainly directing their services to women. All together the participators seem neutral
to plastic surgery - they have an "If It Makes You Happy-Go for it-attitude". That the
topic can be a sore point for somebody has been paid regard to.
