The aim of the thesis was to investigate the suitability of alternative lubrication and cooling methods for Abloy Oy's key profiling machine. The currently used oil mist lubrication presents challenges in maintaining the cleanliness of the machine, and the mixture of oil mist and machining chips causes additional maintenance for the machining equipment. Accumulation of cutting oil in the machine's ventilation system poses safety risks outside the machine in the form of oil leaks.
The thesis primarily analyzed three different lubrication and cooling methods: dry machining, oil mist, and ionized cold air blowing. The objective was to use the obtained results for further testing of the selected lubrication or cooling method on other machines. Initially, the strengths and weaknesses of the current oil mist lubrication were identified. Data on tool lifetimes were collected during the tests, and attempts were made to improve the results with minor adjustments. Finally, the most efficient method in terms of tool productivity was selected, and this method was compared to alternative lubrication and cooling methods. Vibration measurements were also conducted during the study to assess the condition of the machining station. The collected measurements could be utilized in future maintenance monitoring of the machining equipment.
The main finding of the thesis was that the productivity of tools with the alternative lubrication and cooling methods was not at the desired level. The tested lubrication and cooling methods may require further testing with more advanced modifications. Vibration measurements provided a good indication that there was no significant additional vibration in the machining process that could have affected the test results.
