Crisis can hardly be avoided in life and crisis within the nursing profession is no exception, on the contrary. During the past few decades, we have witnessed a vast departure of nurses from their professions. The primary objective of this thesis is to identify the qualities and characteristics demanded of a nurse during a crisis, which often occurs in a nurse's profession. Therefore, it is important to provide the nurses with the means to cope with crisis, and thereby increase the wellbeing, both professionally and privately.
This study was conducted by using a qualitative analysis as an approach. Four databases were scanned, Cinahl, Proquest, Sage, PubMed. Four academic databases were used. Cinahl and Pubmed were chosen because of their wide variety of nursing literature. Sage was chosen for its high quality and peer-reviewed content. A fourth database of nursing literature, ProQuest, was added to the search to reach an adequate width of databases.
After conducting searches in all four databases using the keywords nursing, nurses, crisis, and trauma, 25458 articles were found. After limiting the search according to the inclusion criteria, 788 articles remained. The remaining articles were then screened using inclusion and exclusion criteria. Eventually, only 15 articles remained.
The findings suggest that five main characteristics are demanded of nurses during crisis: withstand pressure, increased resiliency, need to adapt and evolve, coping outside of work and accepting one’s own limitations. These characteristics belong to three major categories: mental/psychological, social, and biological, each having one minor category in order: flexibility, balance in life and accountability. The definition of the sub and minor categories are important for a clear definition of each major category.
This study serves as an adequate foundation for additional research for both students and postgraduates.
