Hip hop dance as the embodiment of the culture is a four-article thesis that aims to center the pedagogical logic innately built into hip hop culture as a base for Hip hop dance education. The work is a decolonial diversification of the field of Finnish dance education, which already draws a lot of influences from hip-hop culture and dance. Finnish dance education leans strongly on the official Basic Art Education Plan provided by the Ministry of Culture, which in turn is based on a Eurocentric art perspective, which, for a large part, is unsuitable or even unapplicable to teaching Hiphop according to its own traditions.
The articles of the thesis discuss Hip hop culture, dance, and its pedagogy from different perspectives. The perspectives are connected by, for example, collective knowledge production, social dance, and questions related to blackness and black art. Hip hop dance is a sociocultural product that is strongly anchored in ethnic and local contexts. For this reason, teaching hip-hop dance in dance schools and creating hip-hop choreography for the stage in the context of Finnish dance can be problematic. However, both pedagogy and performance are deeply rooted in the structures, history, and roots of Hip hop dance, so Hip hop definitely has a place in Finnish dance education as well. Social interaction is essential to Hip hop dance and, like movement, can be regarded as a technical skill that requires practice.
