This thesis studied ways to present an unnamed restaurant business’ mobile offers to consumers in a way that would increase the value for consumers, without changing its financial value. The company wanted in its tests to find out how different types of offers would work in sales and marketing. The purpose of this study was to produce additional value to the company by finding out how they would get consumers more interested in the offers without increasing the discounts.
The development assignment was viewed through behavioural insights. The study´s theoretical framework was based on zero-price effect with the first test and on mental accounting with the second test.
The tests were conducted during 2020-2021 on the company´s mobile offer users, including two different tests on value gain. In the first test, the test was to pit two for the price of one offer against two products -50% offer against each other. Hypothesis, based on previous research, was that the two for the price of one would prevail better due to the zero-price effect. In the second test, the goal was to discover which offer type would work better, when the variants would be a combo deal with a single price point or a discount for a product with the purchase of another. The hypothesis for the second test was that the mobile offer users would choose the package deal variant more likely based on the observation by Thaler and Johnson (1990) that people are generally less negative when they are presented with a single loss than being presented the same amount in several pieces.
Test results indicated that the company could gain additional value for its mobile offers by shaping the offer texts in the mobile offers. The first test showed that, in accordance with the hypothesis, it is possible to increase the productivity of the mobile offers with the zero-price effect. The second test proved that mental accounting can be utilized in shaping combo deals instead of a conditional product discount offers. Both tests were statistically significant. As a note, it must be mentioned that the tests only proved that statistically significant change was achieved with the products and price points used in the testing. If the company wanted to gain a holistic vision of how the different offer types performed, they should conduct further research in which the performance of different offer types would be analysed by product category and different sized and priced purchases.
