Lihaksensisäisellä eli intramuskulaarisella (i.m.) injektiolla halutaan saavuttaa lääkkeen nopea vaikutus.
The purpose of the thesis was to produce teaching material on intramuscular injection for
Metropolia University of Applied Scienses nursing students based on evidence-based information. The aim was to create new clinical nursing teaching materials from muscle injection for teaching and self-study materials. The client of the thesis was Metropolia University of Applied Sciences. The aim was to illustrate knowledge of the muscle injection into the shoulder muscle of the upper arm for nursing students.
It is desired to achieve a rapid effect of the medicine with an intramuscular injection. Safe
intramuscular injection requires care and aseptics, but also knowledge of both the equipment and the human anatomy from the nurse. The topic of the thesis was limited to upper arm shoulder muscle injection (Musculus deltoideus). The theory and teaching material are based on diverse, relevant and reliable sources. Information was collected from various databases in Finnish and English. The thesis also utilized textbooks as material and other literature suitable for the work. The most important topics were nurse aseptics and patient guidance during muscle injections.
The thesis was carried out in a functional way, the output of which is a written report and
teaching material. The teaching material was implemented with an interactive H5P activation tool in the Moodle learning environment. The written report opens up theoretical information about the muscle injection into the shoulder muscle of the upper arm. The written report includes a description of the H5P material.
The H5P teaching material formed as the output of the thesis can be utilized in the classroom teaching of nursing students as well as in independent studying. The teaching material includes evidence-based theoretical information, pictures and question sets. Teaching material can be useful both at the beginning of a nurse's studies and in advanced studies. The material can be also utilized in work environments if the nurse is repeating studies of intramuscular injections or if the employer wishes to test their employees knowledge on the subject.
