The purpose of this development work was to cause an operating model to orientation for the physiotherapy unit of the Central Satakunta Health Care federation of municipalities and an orientation plan to support it, which emphasizes the purposefulness, responsibility, content, follow-up and evaluation of the orientation. The aim of the development work was to create a user-driven orientation for the employees of the physiotherapy unit and to harmonize the orientation policies in the various offices in the unit. The development work wanted to enhance the well-being of the unit’s employees.
The development work was carried out on the basis of work life by the means of service design. The ward nurse and voluntary employees (n=9) of the physiotherapy unit participated in the service design work. The development work proceeded in accordance with the general service design process. In the first phase of the process, an initial mapping of the development needs and the current status of the orientation was made, and the boundary conditions of the process were defined. In the second phase, the employees’ experiences of the physiotherapy unit’s orientation and their views on the developmental operating model were investigated. In the third phase of the process, an operating model for the orientation of the physiotherapy unit was conceptualized and concretely designed. In the fourth phase, the operating model was piloted to test its functionality and to identify possible change needs. In the last phase of the process, the success of the developed operating model and the change in operations brought about by it were evaluated based on user experiences.
The output of the development work was a user-oriented orientation operating model targeted at the physiotherapy unit of the Central Satakunta Health Care federation of municipalities. The operating model for orientation consists of the objectives and general principles of the orientation, of a structured orientation plan, and an assessment and feedback form of the evaluation process.
The new operating model was noted to be of high quality and clear. The client will put the developed operating model in use and regularly evaluate its functionality in the future and develop it as necessary.
