The aim of this Master´s thesis was to describe the Tyks Psychiatry secretaries´ well-being at work in their present working environment as well as the factors in the working environment affecting their well-being at work. The objective was to provide information for the planning project of Tyks Psychiatric Hospital regarding the secretaries´ wishes for the working environment at the new hospital.
The study was conducted as a case study where the information was collected from Tyks Psychiatry secretaries by an e-questionnaire (n=31) compiled by the author, with a 48 % response rate, and by theme interviews (n=10) where the steering group of The job description of department secretaries and the use of secretary labour in-put at Tyks Psychiatry were interviewed. As a result of the study, information was received on the secretaries´ present well-being at work and their views on factors that would enhance their well-being at work in the working environment of the new hospital. The interviews provided information on the fluency of work between the secretaries and the area of responsibility of psychiatry, as well as on factors that enhance cooperation.
According to the study, most secretaries would like to have an office of their own at the new psychiatric hospital, which would have a positive impact on their experience of well-being at work. The secretaries felt that their well-being at work was better than average, and the factors in the physical working environment affected as much as the psychosocial factors on the experience of well-being at work. Based on the results of the questionnaire and the interviews of the steering group, the working area of the secretaries should be close to the unit for which the work is done to ensure cooperation and fluency of working. The modes of operation of secretaries and different areas of responsibility of psychiatry should be harmonized to assure the smooth running of work. The results of the study were similar to previous studies on well-being at work at hospitals. Based on the research results, literature re-view and other theoretical knowledge, a proposal ” Office space that supports well-being at work” – The working environment of Tyks Psychiatry secretaries at the new psychiatric hospital” was drawn up. The proposal emphasizes the secretaries´ need for a quiet working space of their own, availability of appropriate and functioning tools for working, creation of secretary teams for the new hospital, creation and informing of consistent modes of operation and a proposal for supervisory work model for secretaries and the division of duties connected to it. A follow-up study on the well-being at work connected to the physical and psychosocial working environments of ward and office secretaries at the new hospital should be carried out after working at the new hospital for at least a year.
