Asiakkailta saadun kokemustiedon avulla opinnäytetyön tilaajan, Helsingin kaupungin päihdepalveluiden, on mahdollista arvioida sekä kehittää Startti-ryhmää vastaamaan entistä paremmin päihdepalveluiden asiakkaiden tarpeisiin.
Opinnäytetyö on laadullinen tutkimus. Aineisto kerättiin teemahaastatteluilla, jotka toteutuivat yksilöhaastatteluina. Tutkimusta varten haastateltiin seitsemää Startti-ryhmän kaik-kiin neljään eri osioon osallistunutta Lännen päihdepoliklinikan asiakasta. Aineiston ana-lyysimenetelmänä käytettiin aineistolähtöistä sisällönanalyysia. Opinnäytetyön taustalla vaikuttaa fenomenologis-hermeneuttinen lähestymistapa, joka soveltuu inhimillisten ko-kemusten tutkimiseen.
Tutkimustulokset osoittavat asiakkaiden kokemusten Startti-ryhmästä olevan positiivisia.
The purpose of this study was to investigate clients’ experiences of the Startti group by the substance abuse services of the City of Helsinki. A further aim was to examine the clients’ views of the practices used in the Startti group that worked well, and to collect development suggestions related to the group from the clients. The main objective of the study was to obtain clients’ views and make their voices heard as service users. The experiential knowledge collected from the clients will enable the commissioner of the study, the substance abuse services of the City of Helsinki, to assess and develop the Startti group to better correspond to the needs of the clients using the services.
The study was implemented using qualitative methods. Data were collected with individu-ally conducted theme interviews. Seven clients of the Western Substance Abuse Outpatient Clinic participating in all four sections of the Startti group were interviewed for this study. Material-based content analysis was used as the data analysis method. A phenome-nological hermeneutic approach, suitable for investigating human experiences, influenced this study.
The result findings indicate that participants had positive experiences of the Startti group. The ability of the substance abuse outpatient clinic’s employees to encounter clients in a respectful way was the starting point for positive experiences. Respectful encounters with clients lay a foundation for an opportunity for the employees to awaken and support their clients’ motivation for a change within the frame of the Startti group as well as in individual meetings after the group. The results indicate that the individual meetings with em-ployees were the primary reason for participating in the group. The research results reveal that, of the four sections of the Startti activities, the clients considered the one concerned with the client relationship with the substance abuse services of the City of Helsinki as the most important. The opportunity for participating in the Startti group anonymously was also considered a positive factor in the results.
In conclusion, the Startti group can be considered as a well-functioning approach of the substance abuse services, providing a low-threshold option for clients to seek substance abuse services and start their treatment. The information provided in the group on sub-stance abuse services and treatment for substance abusers is important for the clients, as this increases their opportunities for participating in the planning of their individual treat-ment. Development suggestions presented by the clients included a need for written support materials compiled based on the different sections of the Startti group
