Virtual reality is getting relevant again. There is however a number of problems the technology had to, and has to face in order to make VR commercially viable in gaming and other media. This report focuses on the visual side of VR, various hardware limitations of head-mounted displays (HMD) will be investigated. Running real time 3D graphics with high framerate is tolling on the PC hardware rendering the images. Companies like Oculus and Valve tackle these problems differently and this report is comparing solutions and technologies. The focus will also be on what makes a good VR game, what genres could benefit or detriment from the technology. There are several ways to control the experience with various input methods, inputs and combinations of inputs will be explored. VR also has other uses than gaming, how other media like movies or similar interactive experiences will be consumed on HMD’s will be explained. To give another perspective of VR the report also briefly explores uses in medicine, a field that has used the technology before commercial availability for treatment of PTSD and pain-relief.
