The ongoing health trend is one of the strongest consumer trends on the market. According to a study conducted by the Swedish Trade Federation three out of four consumers state that they shop more healthy than unhealthy products. The discussion about health and wellness has heated up especially in Sweden where it has developed into a health frenzy. Surprisingly enough though on average every Swede consumes approximately 5,4 kg of chocolate per person every year. Sweden is therefore the 6th biggest consumer of chocolate and confectionaries in the world. In this degree thesis four advertisements from the Swedish chocolate brand Marabou will be analysed. The ads are from four different decades; 1940’s, 1960’s, 1980’s and 2000’s. The purpose of the thesis is to clarify the marketing message in the ads. Moreover it remains of high interest to inquire into how the sweets manufacturers can survive in the climate of health fanaticism. The qualitative method used for this thesis is the semiotic analysis of data. Semiotics is the science of signs and symbols in society. The emphasis in this thesis is on Charles Peirce’s research with components from Ferdinand de Saussure’s earlier studies in semiology. The semiotic method is supplemented by a literary study in colour and communication theory. The frame of reference for the semiotic analysis is as follows; inner context and denotation, outer context and connotation as well as the marketing message. Historical references are connected in the analysis to help understand the past societal influences. The results of the analysis showed that the message differentiated a bit between the decades. The ad from 1940’s communicated with an instrumental message whilst the ad from 2000’s had a sensory message. The conclusion is however that chocolate advertisement often communicates through affective means, appealing to the consumers’ emotional irrational level rather than the rational.
