The aim of this thesis was to describe what Lean is, from its origin to values, methods and tools. The objective was to find out how manufacturing companies have implemented Lean principles, values and tools and if and in what way they have managed to increase the efficiency of their production. To achieve the objective a qualitative study in the form of six interviews in companies that have implemented Lean was carried out.
The theoretical framework consists of the story behind Lean, the Toyota Production System and how the concept of Lean was born. The values and principles of Lean are explained with the TPS-temple. Lean production briefly means manufacturing in a way that ensures the highest possible value for the customer with as few resources and as little waste as possible.
Since the research was made in manufacturing companies and the question was to find out how Lean is implemented in their production, the production process, production forms and different plant layouts are also briefly explained. Production logistics is the management of the company’s material and resource flows and Lean seeks to improve these flows.
The result of the qualitative survey showed that Lean is not a toolbox, rather a way of thinking. The result also showed that it is important that everybody in the organisation shares the same idea of what Lean is and the importance of trainings were highlighted. All respondents in the survey have, after the Lean implementation, managed to get a neater and safer workplace, they have decreased wastage and become more efficient in their production. The survey showed that workers participate willingly in the continuous improvement process, and management must quickly respond to suggestions and ideas.
