The idea to make a survey about franchising came when the media wrote about some franchisees’ dissatisfaction with the way their own chains treated them. I also have a connection to the catering industry, so focusing on franchising in that line of work was obvious. The franchise business is different in many ways from running a regular business and that is why I wanted to find out more about how it works in practice. The purpose of this thesis is to let some franchisees active in three different chains give their opinions about these things. The idea is also to pinpoint the differences in franchising arrangements between these three chains. In the theoretical part of my thesis franchising is described in general, including for instance the history of franchising, different types of franchising and terms and conditions of the agreement between franchiser and franchisee. Some figures are also presented to support the reading. At the end of the theoretical part the issue on which my thesis is built is presented, and that is several franchisees’ different opinions on the ways their chains treat them. Based on this and the litera-ture, questions to ask the franchisees were formed. The results of the survey show that the franchisees’ opinions regarding these ques-tions go apart, but a certain measure of dissatisfaction in general are shining through and according to this the criticism in the media against some of the chains’ arrangements can be confirmed. The results also show some differences between these three chains, arrangements. The differences are caused by how the agreement between the chain and the franchisees are formed and which the franchisees must follow unconditionally.
