Sustainable development is a current topic in tourism and a golf club faces several sus-tainability challenges. This thesis centers around the process of Ålands Golf Club r.f. becoming environmentally certified. The aim of this thesis is initiate this process, evaluate the current state of the club and identify what measures are needed in the future. For my methods I will use a desk research to familiarize myself with the subjects concerning sustainability, interviews with industry people and benchmarking in order to compare ÅGK with already certified clubs. Ålands Golf Club is dependent on tourism and the revenues from visiting players are essential for the clubs economy. Statistics show that golf tourists visiting Åland is the tourism segment which spend the most amount of money overall, and in doing so they benefit the local tourism industry as a whole. Sustainable development is essentially about economic development that does not damage the environment or social welfare. Sustainable tourism is the application of this concept on the tourism industry. Golf’s sustainability challenges are namely concerning the protection of the environment, the use of resources, the risk of pollution and waste management. Golf Environment Organization is an organization that promotes sustainability in the golfing world and administers the GEO eco label. They offer a free online program for clubs wanting to compile their sustainable work and then issues the label on the basis of several evaluation criteria. The criteria are divided into six categories; nature, water, energy, supply chain, pollution control and community. Results show that the club has already for a long time been working pro actively with the environment in mind, they always try to minimize the resource inputs and already meets most of the criteria. In addition I recommend an extended documentation of sustainability aspects, better communication of environmental work, utilization of the marketing possibilities, establishing an environmental plan for managing the club and actively continuing working with sustainable issues and evaluating where progress can still be made.
