The purpose of this expert knowledge project is to improve public health nurses’ knowledge of how a man today grows into fatherhood and of what kind of support he prefers during this process. The respondent has selected a lecture as the method to improve the support for the father through the health service. A personal meeting is expected to be the most effective option. The respondent would like to acknowledge the local public health nurses’ work and humbly invite them to discussion on the subject and to analyze their own attitude to the father.
The content of the lecture is based on the thesis 88% dad (Wikström, 2011) and on literature about the changes in society and therefore the change in the role of the father since the 1950s. The rhetoric is based on Åkerholm’s two different types of disposal (2002, pp. 15-17). As visual aid during the entire lecture, a Powerpoint presentation was used (appendix 2).
The lecture took place on April 3, 2012. The audience was 21 health care nurses working in maternal and/ or child healthcare, two students and a teacher. The atmosphere was serious but relaxed. Most people are estimated to have received the information with interest. Some interactive listeners contributed to discussion with extremely enriching descriptions of healthcare in touch with the father. These nurses described the father as a resource for the family. After the lecture, when the respondent had departed, a discussion arose.
