Compositing is the act of seamlessly blending two or more source images to form a photorealistic composite image. The composite image should look photorealistic, like it had been photographed in a single exposure. Photorealistic composite images are used among others in magazine advertisements, book covers and movie posters. When these kinds of images are created, everything starts from well planned and photographed source images. The intention of this thesis is to sort out how one can go about the planning and photographing process to be able to, as well as possible, assemble the source images to photorealistic composite images, with help of software. It will also be investigated, if it is possible to photograph realistic shadows as a part of the source images and bring them to the composite image. Aspects such as camera technology, image sensors and properties of light and lenses will not be dealt with. Post-production will only be dealt superficially. In the search of answers for the research questions, theoretical information and hints, are presented, which to a great extent rely on Ron Brinkmann’s book The Art and Science of Digital Compositing (2008) and Matt Kloskowski’s book Photoshop Compositing Secrets (2012). Thereafter, practical examples, which apply the theoretical information, are planned and photographed. The result of the thesis is an overview and a presentation of findings about how the source images could be photographed. In addition the thesis proves that it is possible to photograph realistic shadows as a part of the source images and bring them to the composite image.
