This study was to clarify how the man grows into being a father during the first year of the child’s life and to explore his needs of support during this process. The respondent asked three research questions: How does the man grow into being a father during the child’s first year? What are the father’s experiences of the support received? What kind of support does he prefer? The study is a part in the project VOIMA.
The study used the concepts of interaction and relationships as a theoretical background based on Eriksson, Kasén, Travelbee and Watson's nursing theories. The respondent chose a questionnaire survey as data collection method, in the form of a web questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of closed and open questions and 20 informants responded to the survey. Inductive content analysis and statistic analysis of the responses was undertaken.
The result demonstrates that the man grows into fatherhood through the interaction of various factors. Of these factors, spending time with the child was the most prominent one. The theme “find your role as a father” emerged from the material. Some fathers grow quickly into their feelings for the child, while for others the development may last 6 months or more. Fathers want to be loving, present, role models and calm and responsible. The experience of support varies, but most fathers request more support and information especially for the father. The methods of support vary. The mother's influence on the father's transition is great. She is his main support, but can also prevent him from growing into his role.
