The Turku 2011 Foundation has predicted there to be a 15 percent increase of the hotel capacities in the region of Turku in the year of 2011. The object of this thesis was to conduct a study for the Turku 2011 Foundation in order to find out what opinion four specific hotels in Turku have of this hypothesis.
The theoretical frame of reference in this thesis consists of theory about the European Capitals of Culture, Turku 2011 and Accommodation Services.
The research method in this thesis has been research of literature. The theory is presented in the four first chapters. As analysis for the thesis, qualitative interviews were performed with four hotel managers within Turku. The hotels were; Park Hotel Turku, Hotel Cumulus Turku, Holiday Inn Turku and Scandic Hotel Julia. An interview guide was used for all the interviews. I could analyze from the interviews what the respondents thought of the culture capital year, and get an overview of the specific hotels capacities during the year of 2011.
The result was positive; all respondents had had an increase in their hotel capacities during the year of 2011. Statistics have shown that the hotel capacities in Turku for the time January-June 2011 were 8.3 percent higher than in the year of 2010. The capacities still must rise with 6.7 percent for the Turku 2011 Foundation hypothesis to come true.
