The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the writing process of a sitcom with stereotypical characters as a tool. Which pros and cons does a author have when he only uses stereotypical characters to tell the story. Humans use stereotypes constantly to understand reality and this concept is also used in sitcoms to understand characters.
The thesis will consist of a literary study which defines stereotypes, sitcom and character and then presents Scott Seditas theory on the “Eight Characters of Comedy” and analyse these elements that are often used in sitcoms. After that I describe the process of me writing a script with the help of my findings from the literary study, mostly focusing on Scott Seditas theory. The script process will follow each step in writing a script from a outline to a first draft of the script and each step will be followed by an analysis.
