Drawing on Agency Theory and findings from trust research, this thesis argues that mutual trust can to a certain extent replace control. It sets fourth that audit fees and variable management remuneration serve as proxies to measure the degree of control inside companies. Making use of the ever more harmonized regulatory accounting environment in the EU, it empirically analyzes audit fees and remuneration inside 119 companies from four European countries. The findings support the argument and show that trust might indeed have a decreasing effect on control.
