Hur gick anknytningen?
The purpose of our thesis is to examine reception and integration of foster children, and the connection to the foster family. The key issues in this thesis are: What kind of feelings and patterns of behavior did the foster parents see during the first period when the child was placed in their home? How did the foster parents do to integrate the foster child into their family? How did the connection proceed? And also what elements have complicated and facilitated the connection?
In the theoretical part the focus is on reception and integration of foster children and the connection to the foster parents. We start with children’s rights followed by a retrospect on foster care through the ages. Afterwards we bring up what can cause a child to be taken into custody. We also shortly describe different formes of care outside the home to then focus on placements in foster families and what kind of feelings and patterns of behavior the separation from the biological family can cause.
In this thesis we used qualitative interviews as a research method. We interviewed foster parents who had taken care of at least one foster child under 10 years old. As a result of this study we can state that reception and integration of foster children is mainly about involving the child in the daily life. The child’s previous experiences affect largely on the connection to the foster parents. We have also noticed that there are deficits in the preparatory training and also difficulty with the cooperation between welfare authorities and foster parents.
