Tiivistelmä
This functional final thesis was done in co-operation with the working life partner which in this case was the International Childcare and Education Center (I.C.E.C.). The purpose of this thesis is to support the cognitive development of five to six years old using music and rhythmic movements. The theoretical framework consists of the Early Childhood Education, National Curriculum Guidelines on ECEC in Finland, cognitive development and musical development.
Four different sessions were planned and executed with the pre-schoolers group aged 5-6 from the International Childcare and education center. During the sessions children´s learning progress was observed and recorded. According to the outcome the sessions were carried out in an interesting manner for the children and were able to support their cognitive development. This was evident in the end of the project as children were able to sing and repeat the movements without any supervision.
The implementation was inspired by the musical ways through which 5-6 year olds develop and learn. Musical activities and movement, support children´s cognitive development in a safe atmosphere. Each session focused on a specific topic, which were supported by the implemented methods.
The used working methods were found to support the aims and goals of this project. Each participant managed to take part in each activity which in turn enhanced their cognitive skills.
