The purpose of this thesis is to study the experience of children growing up in a stepfamily. The child´s thoughts, experiences and feelings are important parts of our study. The most important issues are the child´s form of housing, how to solve practical problems, the child´s relationship with its stepparents, stepsiblings and half-siblings and how to find one´s own role and place in the family.
The theoretical discussion begins with definitions of the concept where we bring up different types of families in today´s society. As next, we explain different alternatives of care for the child, practical challenges that can arise when creating a stepfamily and different types of problems that children can experience during a divorce and the creation of a stepfamily. The final reflection is about the everyday life of a stepfamily and how the child does play his role and part in the family.
The outcome of our study shows us that creating a stepfamily is always a big challenge for the children. Even so, many have realized that the situation in the nuclear family was unsustainable and they experience that some of the new relationships that established during the creation of a stepfamily are an asset.
